Johnson & Johnson, through its division known as DePuy Orthopedics, is recalling hip replacement devices. These include the DePuy ASR-XL Acetabular and the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing products.
The specific problem seems to be caused by the metal on metal design. This design flaw has been known for quite some time. There is a chance that this metal on metal design causes metal to flake off inside the patient which can cause inflammation, pain, bone loss and other serious problems. According to a lawsuit already on file, DePuy was aware the recalled devices were defective with over 300 reports of hip device failures. An estimated 93,000 people may be affected by this product recall.
Symptoms include: pain, swelling, walking problems, inflammation, fractures or loosening of the hip product.
If you have had a hip replacement using either of these two products, you may have to undergo additional testing and treatment. In some cases, patients have had to undergo additional artificial hip replacement surgery.
