$2.4 million verdict

On September 29, 2023, a Nueces County jury awarded $2.4 million to LeRoy Torres in his wrongful termination case against the State of Texas. Steve Chapman, a partner at our firm, was the lead trial attorney for Mr. Torres.

Mr. Torres’ case has received local and national news coverage since 2017, the year he filed his lawsuit:

$7.5 Million

West Texas: Oilfield truck collision. The truck driver and trucking company blamed other motorists for the collision. No injury was reported at the scene. Case expenses were $460,000. Attorney’s fees were $3,000,000. Client net was $3,254,900.

$4 Million

Central Texas: 18-wheeler collision. The truck driver and trucking company blamed our client. No injury was reported at the scene. Case expenses were $151,166.72. Attorney’s fees were $1,600,000. Client received $1,941,689.00.

$3 Million

Central Texas: 18-wheeler collision. The truck driver and trucking company blamed our client. No injury was reported at the scene. The case settled two years after the wreck. Case expenses were $94,000. Attorney’s fees were $1,200,000. Client received $1,382.470.93.

$3.9 Million

Central Texas: 18-wheeler collision. The truck driver and trucking company denied responsibility for the wreck. After nearly two years of litigation, we reached a significant settlement for our client. Attorney’s expenses were $143,268.78. Attorney’s fees were $1,560,000.00. The client received $2,196,731.22.

$2.25 Million

North Texas: Head-on collision involving oilfield truck. The truck driver accepted no responsibility and blamed another motorist for causing the wreck. At the time of the collision, our client had a blood alcohol content over the legal limit. No settlement offers were made to our client, so we sued the truck driver and his employer in their county, which is one of the worst counties in the state for injury lawsuits. The case settled shortly before trial. Client and his family received $959,341.74. Attorney’s Fees were $900,000 and expenses were $174,611.92.

Confidential Settlement following multi-million dollar verdict

After a two-week trial, a DeWitt County jury awarded $44 million in actual damages to two young men who were injured in a collision with an 18-wheeler. It was the largest injury verdict in the history of DeWitt County. The18-wheeler company appealed the verdict, and we negotiated a confidential settlement for our client’s portion of it.

South Texas: Crash involving 18-wheeler. Liability was heavily contested. We resolved the case within 14 months. Clients received $1,650,411.31. Fees and expenses were $1,295,300.28.

$2.95 million

South Texas: Crash involving farm tractor. We resolved the case within 10 months. Liability was contested. Client received $1,710,406.47. Litigation Expenses $59,593.53. Attorney Fees $1,180,000.00.

Tennessee: Wreck involving company truck. Client received $2,000,360.78. Litigation Expense $114,639.22. Attorney Fees $1,410,000.00.
