Hartsville worker burned in workplace accident

HARTSVILLE, S.C. (WPDE) -- A man had to be airlifted to a hospital Sunday morning after being burned in an workplace accident at Sonoco’s Hartsville Manufacturing Complex, according to Roger Schrum, Vice President, Investor Relations & Corporate Affairs Sonoco Products Company.

Schrum said by email “employees were cleaning up material from below a paper machine at the mill when one employee slipped and fell into a shallow opening where heated condensates collects.“

He added the employee suffered burns on his leg, hand and shoulder.

Darlington County EMS responded and treated the employee at the scene and then he was airlifted to the Augusta Burn Center where he currently is being treated, according to Schrum.

At this time, there is no additional information on the employee's condition.

Schrum said Sonoco safety personnel are further investigating the incident.
